I am, in the spirit of questioning, going back to fundamental givens-- depth, color, time, and movement-- and changing details.  My goal is to use existing relationships in a given place as my medium.  I expose mechanisms that are at work, that form the image that floats to the surface of our consciousness.   In everyday places we see objects and situations we are familiar with.  But within that brief moment of understanding, in the interpretation of our familiar and comfortable surroundings, much of the richness of a place is lost.  The very things that define where we are as place are the details, contradictions, and illusions.  I search for these details and bring light to them.  

Using commonplace materials such as cellophane, tape, glass, mirrors, house paint, and frames, I stage interventions.  I look at the reactive qualities of materials and how they interact with a place.  Light surrounds us, but with reflective material I can funnel and warp it into a new image that seemingly contradicts its surroundings.  Focusing found light allows me to isolate and study it.  I look at it in terms of the color it is (projection with mirrors) or what color it could shift to (cellophane, glass).  It envelops us, and yet we are trained to see past it to look for meanings of the things it illuminates.

Movement, too, is vital because it underlines the fact that our experience of place moves with us.  In looking at transitional spaces such as stairways, hallways, or pathways, I emphasize movement by creating illusions of forms that visibly warp and shift into other deliberate forms.  Both the visual mark making throughout the work and the means I achieve these marks are dictated by found aspects of the space.  The color or light I misplace is often so considerate of the language of the place that the edges of my images overlap seamlessly with existing elements of each place.  I am looking to prompt that moment of surprise that comes when our expectations do not meet up with reality.  A simple shift in detail can bring to light questions about not only how we see, but how we move and live in a place.  It is as much about changing what we see as it is about shifting the logic around how we see.
